Will you be the winner of the coveted epee champion lunchbox?

May 3rd we will be putting on the electrical epee gear and having our in-club tournament.  The winner lunchbox goes to the top Wakefield student.  If time allows fence for the pride of Wakefield against the top fencers from Washington & Lee and Yorktown.

Now that we have passed the midway mark, Wakefield fencers are welcome and encouraged to join the Arlington Fencers' Club practices.  Wakefield fencers are also members of the Arlington Fencers' Club, which is our parent club.  Regular club meetings will resume after Spring Break.  Arlington Fencers' Club is a year round club, so you can keep fencing even after the Wakefield club ends for the school year.  See the schedule below for times and locations.

The beat goes on

Our classes have continued with an exploration of epee and saber.  Coach Geoff Butler introduced attacks to the hand and foot as a method of teaching point control using the epee.  Epee is a dueling weapon where the entire body is a valid target.  Head Coach Rick Orli made a special appearance at the last class to introduce saber.  Saber is well suited to fast, physical athletes.

First class

Today we worked on balance, footwork, peripheral vision (yes, it can be improved!) and suited up for a little fencing.  Several Wakefield fencers have some fencing experience, and we were joined by a couple of experienced fencers from W&L and Yorktown.

Fencing Starts this Friday - March 1

Fencers,
Our first day of fencing is tomorrow, and I am looking forward to it.  When you arrive at TJ Community Center proceed to the back of the gym behind the wall of bleachers.  Coach Geoff Butler and Coach Alec Walker will already be there.  They will be finishing up with the Jefferson Club.  I will also be fencing with you.  Any early arrivals can start warming up before class.  If you need to change into athletic pants there are locker rooms at TJ.  You may also fence in jeans.  Please wear tennis or court shoes.  Chuck Taylors or Vans or similar shoes are perfectly fine; the low profile helps you feel the floor as you move back and forth.

I have bus passes for you.  Please pick them up in the library.  The bus is 418.

Bring a water bottle.  There are water fountains in the gym but it saves time to have a water bottle with you.

Class ends at 5pm; however, it is good form to help the Coaches carry the gear out to their cars.  After the coaches are packed up you are on your own.

En Garde!
